Hill-Murray prevailed in a defensive battle against Mahtomedi, with three points from Isaac Kohls and 19 saves from Joe Phillippi. Mitch Smith stopped 34 of 37 shots for Mahtomedi.

The Zephyrs came out firing in the first period, forcing Phillippi to stop a breakaway and several other hard shots. Smith was equally sharp at the other end and the first period ended scoreless.

Hill-Murray tightened things up in the second period, scoring twice and allowing only one quality shot. The Pioneers took the lead at 4:37 when Smith attempted to clear the puck, but it was intercepted by Kohls along the right boards. Kohls sent it at the net, where it was blocked right onto the stick of Monte French who scored from 10 feet.

Kohls also kept the puck in the zone on Hill-Murray's second goal, working in to Dan Cecka on the left boards. Cecka cut to the slot and fed Bo Dolan at the blue line, and Dolan's slap shot went under Smith's right pad at 8:08.

Leading 2-0 and on the power play with less than three minutes remaining in the game, Hill-Murray seemingly had the game under control, until Mike McDonald raced down the right side and took a shot that Phillippi saved with his blocker. Andy Singerhouse was backchecking to prevent a 2-on-1 and had the puck go off his skate and into the net for a shorthanded goal.

Still on the power play, Cecka was tripped on a breakaway, drawing another penalty. On the ensuing 5 on 3, Cecka set up Kohls in the slot from behind the net and the two goal lead was restored.
