Game Recap

Seconds after the first puck drop, Hill-Murray came flying down the ice and Tyler Zepeda slid a pass over to Nick Widing. Widing's shot appeared destined for the upper corner, but it hit the shaft of the stick of Tartan goalie Chris Harwood. That might have been a indicator that Harwood was about to extend his mastery of the Pioneers after a 45 save performance against them in December. Instead, it was the only thing that prevented Hill-Murray's newly assembled first line from scoring on their first four shifts of the game. Ryan Furne ended up with three goals, and linemates Widing and Zepeda had three assists each. The Pioneers eventually put the clock on running time and extended their team shutout streak to three games.

There was some confusion over a play early in the game in which the puck ended up underneath Harwood but across the goal line. One referee signaled goal, but it was later retracted. Much like an earlier game against White Bear Lake, Hill-Murray wasted no time in scoring an undisputed goal. Furne's 30 foot shot along the ice ricocheted off a defenseman's skate and under Harwood for the game's first goal.

Three minutes later, Zepeda shot wide on a breakaway but retrieved the puck in the left corner and sent a cross-ice pass to Furne who one-timed it just inside the far post from the right circle.

It was Furne setting up the next goal with another great pass, this one to Dan Sova breaking in from the right point. Sova waited for Harwood to go down and roofed a shot for Hill-Murray's third goal of the period.

The Pioneers' second line had the scoring honors in the second period. Isaac Kohls set up Dan Cecka from behind the net, and later on the same shift, Andy Singerhouse whipped a cross-ice pass to Kohls who scored on the short side from the bottom of the left circle.

Widing set up Furne streaking to the net in the third period, and Furne flipped in a backhand to complete his hat trick on Hill-Murray's only full power play of the game. However, it might have appeared that they were on the power play for most of the first and third periods given their time spent controlling the puck in the offensive zone. Tartan managed only a few dangerous shots in the game, and Hill-Murray's 43-16 shot advantage was indicative of the control they had throughout.
