Game Recap

In a result that would seem surprising after an 11-2 game between these teams 30 days ago, the suddendly stingy Richfield Spartans took Hill-Murray to overtime. Richfield had won eight in a row since losses to Hill-Murray and St. Thomas a month ago, and nearly extended their streak led by Mark Guggenberger's 48 saves.

Brock Hill scored the first goal for Richfield at 9:38 of the first period on a goal-mouth scramble just after a Hill-Murray penalty. It was the first power play goal allowed by Hill-Murray since they last played Richfield, a span of nearly ten games.

Ryan Furne tied the game on Hill-Murray's 18th shot, stealing the puck in the corner and stickhandling to the slot where he put a high shot into the net.

The second period went much like the first with Hill-Murray dominating the play but Richfield scoring a go-ahead goal. Adam Seaman tipped the puck past a pinching Pioneer defender, sending Brock Hill up the right side on a 2-on-1. Joe Phillippi appeared to stop Hill's initial shot, but the puck wound up in the net for a 2-1 Richfield lead.

Phillippi made his best save a couple minutes later, when Cole Gunner got the puck all alone in front of the net and made a backhand move, but Phillippi extended his right leg and held firm for a save on the post.

Nick Larson pulled Hill-Murray even at 2-2, creating a turnover in the right corner and sliding a backhander under Guggenberger for an unassisted goal.

The third period was almost all Hill-Murray as they sent many quality shots at Guggenberger, who was positioned well and for the most part did not allow any rebound chances. With 1:50 left, Larson went around two defenders and flipped the puck over Guggenberger for what would have been a beautiful goal, but two players had become tangled in the crease and the goal was disallowed.

Hill-Murray continued to pour on pressure, with Larson taking a one-timer from between the circles that Guggenberger stopped with his pad and again held on. Ryan Furne made a great effort to win the game early in overtime, when he picked off the puck in the slot and got off a shot with a defenseman draped all over him.

On the winning goal, Larson blocked a clearing attempt at the blue line and eventually worked the puck to Tyler Zepeda in the left corner. Zepeda passed to Dan Sova at the blue line, who stepped in and sent a snap shot past Guggenberger's blocker to give Hill-Murray a 3-2 win.
