  • To accommodate larger crowds, the State Tournament was moved to the St. Paul Civic Center, where it would remain through 1998.
  • Hill-Murray scored twice to erase a 4-2 deficit in the third period of the state quarterfinal, winning on Mike Hurt's overtime goal. Repeat champion Grand Rapids defeated the Pioneers for the second straight year in the semifinal, with future University of Minnesota head coach Don Lucia assisting on the winning goal. Jeff Whisler scored four goals in Hill-Murray's victory over Bemidji in the third place game.
