2019-2020 Hill-Murray Hockey

State Champion
Section 4AA Champion
Metro East Champion
  • 2020 was a tale of three sub-seasons. The Pioneers started 6-0, then had a 3-5-2 stretch (which did include back-to-back shutout wins over Edina), then finished 13-1-1 to win a state championship.
  • Hill-Murray played their best against the state's top teams, going 4-0-1 against the AA tourney field during the regular season, and 3-0 in the tournament itself.
  • Hill-Murray set a school record by playing in seven overtime games, but didn't win until the seventh, which was the one they really needed. Charlie Strobel scored the winner in the final minute of overtime, one of four goals he scored in the tourney. It was the 100th game all-time against St. Thomas Academy and first in the championship bracket of the tourney since STA joined Class AA in 2014.
  • Hill-Murray rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat White Bear Lake 3-2 in the section final, with Nick Pierre scoring the third goal while shorthanded, the second year in a row that the section final winning goal was shorthanded.
  • Remington Keopple was the state's top netminder and finished as Hill-Murray's leader in career saves and single season save percentage.
  • A Hill-Murray goalie who had graduated 40 years ago, Jeff Poeschl, coached Mahtomedi to its first Class A championship.
  • After Hill-Murray's state championship on March 7, the girls basketball tournament was canceled the following week, along with all subsequent winter and spring sports. Thus the AA hockey championship was the last sports title awarded for the 2020 school year.
