2003-2004 Hill-Murray Hockey Section 3AA 2nd Place Classic Suburban Conference Champion
- The season
was highlighted by a memorable section semifinal win over White Bear
Lake. Down 3-0 after one period, the Pioneers rallied, spurred by
Tim Dickhudt's play on the penalty kill, and the game went into
overtime. James Fangel stopped a breakaway, then Joey McEnaney
batted in a rebound of Derek McCallum's point shot for a 5-4 win.
- Hill-Murray
nearly pulled off another upset in the section final, getting an
outstanding performance from senior goalie James Fangel against state
#1 Centennial. A mad scramble in front of the Centennial goal in
the final 30 seconds was as close as anybody came to beating the
Cougars this postseason. Centennial went 30-1 and become the first team
in state history to post three consecutive shutouts in the state
tournament.
- The Pioneers reclaimed the Classic Suburban title, going a perfect 16-0.
- Senior
captain Jay Cascalenda played both forward and defense for the second
consecutive season. He finished a three year career with 40 goals
and 80 assists and later played for Minnesota-Duluth.
- Sam Kelly had six goals and three assists in a Dec. 11 game against Simley, and was named a Mr. Hockey finalist.
- Period lengths increased from 15 minutes to 17 minutes at the start of the season.
