2008-2009 Hill-Murray Hockey State 6th Place Section 4AA Champion
- With both teams returning many players from their 2008 state final teams, Edina and Hill-Murray entered 2009 ranked #1 and #2, and the Pioneers' 3-1 win at Braemar Arena in early December made them the early season favorite. But a lackluster holiday tournament followed by a midseason roster turnover left Hill-Murray with a 15-9-1 regular season record and a three way tie for second in the conference.
- Nevertheless, Hill-Murray eked out two overtime wins in the section playoffs and advanced to the state tournament with only five returning players, as they had in 2007. The Pioneers would lose a closely fought contest to state #1 (but tournament #2 seed) Eden Prairie in the quarterfinal. EP went on to the school's first state championship.
- Coached by former Hill defenseman Les Larson, Breck won that school's second Class A championship and would repeat in 2010.
- Tartan claimed the #1 in Section 4AA but was ousted by Johnson in the first round on a goal in the final 10 seconds. So the annual Hill-Murray/White Bear matchup took place in the semifinal. Ben Bahe netted the overtime winner, and defenseman Jordan Johnson followed that in the final with a goal on an end-to-end rush in the second overtime.
-
Tyler Zepeda became just the third player in school history to play in four state tournaments. The speedy forward finished among the school's all time leaders in assists (108) and points (167).
-
Duke Pieper made the team as a freshman defenseman, but had ill symptoms prior to the team's first game which turned out to be a life threatening brain condition. He made a miraculous recovery and served as the team manager in later seasons.
